Today, the NASE represents hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs and micro-businesses, and is the largest nonprofit, nonpartisan association of its kind in the United States."   NASE is an "advocacy" organization supporting self-employed individuals and related very small businesses.  NASE offers publications, on-line resources to members, access to consultants about specific business issues (taxes, marketing, etc.),  and discounted rates on certain benefits including insurances of various kinds, travel services, and credit cards.  Perhaps worth a look if someone becomes self-employed and the potential benefits appear attractive.
